How to Prepare for CBAM Reporting: A Step-by-Step Guide for UK Manufacturers

If you have been reading our blogs, you will now be aware of CBAM, the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. However, do you understand what’s required to stay compliant?
The clock is ticking, and preparation is key.
If your products, or your customers’ products, end up in the EU, you’ll soon need to provide accurate emissions data to meet CBAM reporting obligations. Here’s how to start:
1️⃣ Identify if you’re affected.
Check whether your goods fall under CBAM categories such as steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, or electricity, and whether they are exported to the EU directly or indirectly.
2️⃣ Map your supply chain.
Find out where emissions occur, both in your own processes and from your suppliers. Transparency here will save major headaches later.
3️⃣ Collect emissions data.
Gather data on fuel use, energy consumption, and raw materials. The EU requires this in a specific format, so start standardising your measurements now.
4️⃣ Engage your suppliers.
Suppliers outside the EU may not yet realise CBAM affects them. Help them understand the importance of providing verified emissions information.
5️⃣ Put systems in place.
Automating data collection and creating digital records will make compliance easier. MSG is developing simple tools to help manufacturers manage this process efficiently.
CBAM compliance doesn’t have to be daunting, it’s about preparation and smart systems. Those who act early will protect EU business relationships and gain a sustainability advantage.
At Manufacturing Support Group (MSG), we’re here to help UK manufacturers adapt with clarity and confidence.
